The future of computing?

September 1st, 2009

If your not cool like me and don’t have a shiney new apple device in front of you, chances are you’ve got a PC of some description. Composing of a number of different manufacturers chips, input and output devices, your desk has become a clutter of brand names and your “PC” or “Laptop” are the terms you will commonly use to refer to this amalgamation of tech. However, things are changing…

There has been a number of sites becoming popular that suggest that online-society is shift to consolidating there online tool. MyHandle, as featured on BBC Click, allows for users to consolidate multiple email address’ into one. Other sites feature functionality such as allowing you to login to multiple networks under the same address. Look at the local Mac Application Adium and online applications such as Facebook Connect. Even google has their own…

Which brings me neatly to my point. In out capitalist society, competition between companies is regulated by many long and arduous business laws. However, if one were to create an system so perfect that society as a whole embraced it, who and what would that look like?

My answer – Google!!

With Google having released their first Operating System recently it’s becoming more apparent that they are dragging society away from the traditional computing model of a locally based data manager, to the online, Cloud Computing model. By creating and storing data and files online you should never need to be away from your files or data, providing you have web access.

“But what if we don’t have web access” I hear you cry! Well, heres my next question! where is our mesh networks? thus far to my knowledge Portsmouth have used mesh networks to depict busses on their route but still no more advanced application methods of mass communication.

The issue remains, how will everyone find the right operating system for everyone? I think it’s already here! My Dad is not a tech person. He gets other people to operate the Internet and until recently even Microsoft Word. So you can imagine my shock when I see him clutching and iPod Touch! He’s happy to use such an easy to grasp interface, and I think that is what Google or Apple should do with a Cloud based OS. Follow the iPhone and Apple Safari’s model for Application and Bookmark interfaces.

Eventually though I think most people will adopt an iPhone style of mobile tech, featuring a wireless mouse keyboard monitor and even powering devices wirelessly when at home.

For the more demanding, heavier user, graphics tablets have been bouncing around blogs for what seems an eternity! And some of them looking just gorgeous.

The future for tech looks exciting and I think Apple have the edge, but the web and Cloud Computing offer little without the media content thats visible on it! I look forward to seeing how new digital interfaces and infastructure will shape the creativity of society.
